REPORT | Belgium MU17 0-1 Ireland MU17 | The Irish PostIreland Men’s Under-17s finished their friendly double-header in Belgium with an impressive 1-0 win at the Belgium Football Centre in Trubize. William Martin of Odense Boldklub scored the game’s only goal in the 10th minute following an excellently worked team goal that opened up the hosts. The same teams had played out a stalemate on Saturday but it would be Ireland who left with the victory in a tightly fought affair between the sides. The game winning play started with goalkeeper Oisin Cooney. He played it out to captain Luca Cailloce, who shifted it to his defensive teammate Kaylem Harnett. Wexford’s Harnett slid a pass down the right to Jaden Umeh whose ball was swept home by Martin for the opener. It was almost 2-0 to the young Boys in Green when Luke O’Donnell stung the finger tips of Theo Radelet when he struck a sweet free-kick that was matched well by the Belgium stopper.

The game was the final part of preparation for O’Brien’s team who are in U17 EURO qualification action next month when they take on Armenia, Iceland and Switzerland at Turner’s Cross in Cork. Ireland: Cooney, Harnett (McCarthy, 46’), Cailloce (C) (McGlinchey, 46’), Roche, Coffey, Finneran (M. Moore, 58’), O’Donnell (S. Winless St. Patrick's Athletic suffer loss to Finn HarpsIt's already four games into the new League of Ireland season, but already these are worrying times around Inchicore. Third from bottom of the Premier Division with just a single point to their name, St Patrick’s Athletic appear to be in crisis. Liam Buckley’s side coughed up an early lead and, in a scrappy game, made heavy going of trying to get their first win of the season in front of their frustrated fans. They dominated possession in the second-half but ultimately lacked the street smarts to unlock a Harps side that scored from their only attacks of note.

And the Saints’ mission does not get any easier with a trip to Dundalk this weekend followed by back-to-back derbies against Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians. Saints were gifted a dream start after three minutes when Graham Kelly capitalised on Jonny Bonner’s defensive howler to beat Ciaran Gallagher from close range. The hosts were tenacious in those opening minutes and looked more than capable of stretching their lead. But their failure to drive home that advantage came back to haunt them as Buckley’s charges pressed the self destruct button.

Saints almost made amends within 90 seconds as centre-back Gavin Peers smacked the crossbar with a left-footed swipe. But St. Pat's were left reeling a minute before the break when Harps snatched the lead after a defensive cockup of their own. Michael Barker was dispossessed and Caolan McAleer squared for Ciaran O’Connor who made no mistake from 12-yards. Saints upped the intensity after the break but Kelly ought to have done better with a skewed shot on the run just 30 seconds after the restart. But for all their possession, the home side lacked a spark in the final third and not even the arrival of Kurtis Byrne and later Christy Fagan could change that.
